Jimmy Walker

Squad Number: 23
Position: Goalkeeper
Born: 9th Jul 1973 (Nottingham)
Signed: 10th Jun 2004 (£0)
Contract: Details unknown
Previous Club: Walsall

'Wacka' was allowed to leave his spiritual home of Walsall - after serving the Midlanders gallantly for more than a decade - when Alan Pardew snapped him up on a free in the summer of 2004 to compete with Steve Bywater for the goalkeeper's jersey. He made himself an instant hero by saving a Frank Lampard penalty in the Carling Cup defeat at Chelsea before damaging cruciate ligaments during the 2005 play-off final.

Often described as the best goalkeeper outside of the Premiership, nobody would begrudge the amiable 32-year-old the chance to finally make an appearance in the top-flight once he returns from injury.

First goal was at his near post and the second through his legs. He'll be dissapointed.

Didnít exactly boss the six yard box in the first half but a number of superb saves earned us the points.

1-0 v Manchester City (h) 15th April 2006

Made two top-class saves, the one from Sinclair was a contender for save-of-the-season.

2004/05 Match Notes & Ratings

1-0 v Preston North End (n) 30th May 2005
by Gordon Thrower

Not overly tested but the incident in which he got injured could so easily have cost us dear.

1-0 v Preston North End (n) 30th May 2005
by East Stand Martin

Did a good job although he was saved on the one occasion by Newton's goal-line clearance. Hopefully back in time for the start of the Premiership.

2-0 v Ipswich Town (a) 18th May 2005
by East Stand Martin

A clean sheet for Mansfield-fan Jimmy, although he had a fair bit of luck with one shot that squirmed loose and could have gone anywhere - and on another night probably would have done.

2-2 v Ipswich Town (h) 14th May 2005
by Graeme Howlett

Not the best of days for Jimmy, who had a part to play in both Ipswich goals. The first was pure misfortune; the second will raise question marks over the lack of communication with Anton Ferdinand. Almost got himself lobbed too and had to act quickly to avert disaster. On the bright side his distribution was good.

1-2 v Sunderland (h) 29th April 2005

A fine save in the second half but he seemed a little late to react to the danger for their first goal.

2-2 v Brighton & Hove Albion (a) 23rd April 2005
by Gordon Thrower

Not at fault for either goal where he might have expected more of a challenge from those in front of him.

1-0 v Stoke City (a) 19th April 2005
by East Stand Martin

One worrying moment when he spilled a high ball under pressure but otherwise not over-tested.

1-1 v Millwall (h) 16th April 2005
by Gordon Thrower

Maybe a fraction slow off his line for the goal but otherwise dealt well with what little came his way.

1-1 v Millwall (h) 16th April 2005
by East Stand Martin

Seemed a little slow to react for Hayles' goal but never troubled after (or prior to) that moment, thanks mainly to the ineffectiveness of Millwall's attack.

3-0 v Coventry City (h) 9th April 2005
by Gordon Thrower

Unemployed for large periods of the match he nevertheless came up with some vital saves at important moments in the game. Now seems to be taking his cup form of earlier in the season into the league.

3-0 v Coventry City (h) 9th April 2005
by East Stand Martin

Two world class saves kept the scores level until we managed to make the breakthrough late on. Couldn't fault his distribution either.

1-0 v Burnley (a) 5th April 2005
by East Stand Martin

aka Jimmy Floyd Walker - F*ck all to do. 35,000 Points.

2-1 v Wigan Athletic (a) 2nd April 2005
by East Stand Martin

Didn't put a foot wrong. Excellent handling and distribution, perhaps could have been slightly quicker in releasing the ball to the wings but that's a minor criticism. Made one excellent save in the first half when one-on-one against Roberts, stood tall and saved well with legs.

Not really tested. Came for one cross which he dropped under blatantly illegal pressure from a forward but did well to recover.

2-4 v Wolves (a) 15th January 2005

Lacked the confidence that he'd shown in his previous matches in the cups and he really ought to have done a lot better with the second goal.

2-4 v Wolves (a) 15th January 2005

Looked Nervous in his first league start, and may have opened the door for Bywater. Difficult decision for Pardew ahead.

Not really given much to do. Positioning was a little suspect for their first goal and had a dodgy moment with Malky in the first half. Made one close range save in the second half from a panicky moment.

I was impressed by the keeper. He looks a very good shot-stopper and even though he has a lack of height he does make some really good catches. Jimmy ooks a good keeper and Bywater is going to have to be on top form to keep him out.

2-0 v Southend United (h) 24th August 2004

Excellent debut. Looked calm and collected throughout and made one excellent save when it mattered. Bywater has competition.
