West Ham's Rufus Brevett has broken his ankle and could be out of action until after Christmas, Hammers boss Glenn Roeder has confirmed.

KUMB revealed yesterday that Brevett - injured after falling awkwardly during Saturday's 0-0 draw with Sheffield United - could be out of action until 2004.

A scan last night confirmed that Brevett's ankle had indeed been broken. Hammers boss Roeder, speaking this morning revealed:

"It's bad news because Rufus has been outstanding for us since he arrived last January.

"The injury was a freak because it occurred with no one around him but he will be out for some time - which is just what we didn't want on top of everything else."

Roeder's search for fresh players must now include the left-back slot, as the only other left-back at the club - Shaun Byrne - is yet to make a start for the first team, despite having been at the club for several seasons.

Despite Roeder's promise that '4 or 5' new players would be brought into the club by the end of the transfer window (August 31st) there is still no sign of any imminent arrivals.

The Hammers have however been linked with several players in the past 48 hours; names in the hat have included West Brom's Welsh international midfielder Andy Johnson, Blackburn's fiery full-back Andy Todd and Chelsea's Carlton Cole.
