West Ham have been linked with a move for highly-rated American defender Carlos Bocanegra, according to reports emanating from the States.

24-year-old Bocanegra, a centre-half who can also play at left-back will be a free agent at the end of 2003 after refusing to re-sign his current deal with the USA's MLS (Major League Soccer) - and, according to reports has been talking with the Hammers - along with one or two other European sides - -about a possible move.

In typical American fashion Richard Motzkin, the principal of US outfit Sportsnet (the company who currently hold his contract) said of Bocanegra:

"Carlos is a gifted player and SportsNet played a significant role in developing the strategy that allowed him to be a 'free agent' at this point in his young career.

"We worked with Carlos on this plan for some time and, as a result of SportsNet's efforts throughout 2003, we now have multiple club opportunities for him in Europe."

Twice voted MLS defender of the year Bocanegra is said to be quick and strong, both on the ground and in the air.

Also thought to be interested in the young defender - who is planning to cement a move in time for the new year - are Bundesliga outfits Munich and Hannover, whilst Manchester City have also expressed an interest.
