Hammers duo get the nod

David James and Joe Cole have both been named in Sven Goran Eriksson's latest England squad, which faces Australia at Upton Park next week.

James - who Eriksson announced tonight would start the game which takes place this coming Wednesday (February 12th) - is joined once again by Joe Cole, West Ham's most consistent performer this season who had been omitted from recent squads.

However there was no call-up for the in-form Jermain Defoe; Erikkson rather strangely preferring Everton's 17-year-old Wayne Rooney, Southampton's James Beattie and Arsenal's Francis Jeffers - a player who has barely featured in the Gunner's first team this season.

Hammers new boy Lee Bowyer also failed to make the final cut, although he would have been unavailable due to an ankle injury.

Full England squad:

Goalkeepers: David James (West Ham), Paul Robinson (Leeds), Richard Wright (Everton)

Defoe instead joins team-mate Michael Carrick in David Platt's under-21's; they face Italy in Carrera on Tuesday night (February 11th).

* Don Hutchison was called up to Bertie Vogts latest Scotland squad earlier in the week. He is due to make his comeback when the Scots face the Republic of Ireland - themselves featuring West Ham's Gary Breen - in Glasgow next Wednesday night. Don is joined in the squad by Hammers team-mate Christian Dailly.
