Hammers in Batistuta link

West Ham have been linked with an audacious swoop for Roma's out of favour Argentinian striker Gabriel Batistuta.

According to a report in one of today's tabloid newspapers officials from West Ham met with Batistuta's agents after Roma's Champions League defeat against Ajax on Tuesday night, with view to thrashing out a loan deal to bring the 33-year-old striker to Upton Park for the remainder of the season.

Yet, as is often the case with stories such as these there are no direct quotes from any of the parties involved to suggest that the story is anything more than pure speculation.

Batistuta is rumoured to be earning in the region of £60,000 per week - a figure clearly way out of reach for West Ham, currently £16m in debt.

The timing of the report could also be viewed as somewhat suspicious; with supporters anger increasing over the Board's lack of investment in the team it has been suggested that the story is little more than a cynical ploy by Club insiders to win over wavering supporters.

We'll believe it when we see it ...
