West Ham earned a valuable point with a backs-to-the-wall show at St James Park this afternoon.

The Hammers eked out a draw despite playing most of the second half with only ten men, after Paul Konchesky was harshly dismissed for a professional foul.

As was the case for many games at Upton Park last season, the visiting team placed ten men behind the ball - but this time it was the Hammers providing the rearguard action.

Superbly marshalled by Danny Gabbidon, West Ham gave Newcastle few opportunities to break the deadlock - and could have nicked a winner themselves in injury time had Bobby Zamora, on as a late sub, taken his chance.

* The two clubs promoted along with West Ham last season - Sunderland and Wigan - are yet to earn a point between them after they lost at Liverpool and Charlton respectively this afternoon.
