Hammers face Palermo

Filed: Friday, 25th August 2006
By: Matthew O'Greel

West Ham will play Italian side Palermo in the first round of the UEFA Cup.

Alan Pardew's men face the Rosenaro at The Boleyn Ground in the first leg on Thursday, 14 September with the return leg to be held at the Stadio Renzo Barbera (capacity 37k) on Thursday, September 28th.

Palermo have a good UEFA Cup pedigree, having reached last year's final 16 before going down 3-1 on aggregate to German side Schalke.

They finished eighth in Serie A last season before qualifying for the UEFA Cup by default.

Palermo - who like West Ham have never won the top national league - would not have been in the UEFA Cup has it not been for the ommision of several Italian teams as a result of the Serie A scandal, which saw Juventus relegated and a number of other teams penalised.

As a result of the scandal, Serie A will not begin until September 10th, meaning that Palermo's visit to London will come just four days after their first competitive fixture since last season.
