Etherington: do or die

Matthew Etherington has called Saturday's trip to Wigan a 'do or die' fixture.

The losers on Saturday will be favourites for the drop with just two games to play thereafter - yet Etherington claims that the Hammers will be ready for the game following the wake up call at Sheffield United a fortnight ago.

"We know what kind of game to expect," he said. "It will be along the same lines as the Sheffield United game - this time we've got to deal with it better.

"But we've still got a chance."

25-year-old Etherington was banned from driving for a year yesterday after being found guilty of drink driving, after a breath test last August found him 2mg over the legal limit. Harlow Magustrates Court fined him £2,000 and ordered him to pay costs of £400,

Meanwhile Wigan's England under-21 international Leighton Baines has called on his fellow team-mates to 'show a bit of character'.

"We knew that this game against West Ham was always going to be a big one," he said. "We're in a relegation battle and it's different to what we've been used to.

"But it's a good time to show a bit of character and show things that perhaps the players who have been here over the last few years haven't needed to show.

"It's all about stepping up now and all being men. It's been in our own hands all season and we've not been in the bottom three all season. We've got three more games to ensure we don't end up in there at any point."
