Matthew Upson is to join up with his international colleague later today after he retained his place in the final England squad.

England manager Fabio Capello had named a preliminary 30-man squad on Thursday, due to be cut to 23 yesterday.

Upson discovered prior to yesterday's 1-0 defeat at Wigan that he had been retained in the final 23 which congregates at the team's Watford base later today.

Capello, speaking to on the FA's website this morning said:

I'm looking forward to working with them on the training ground. There is a lot of work to do but I am ready for the challenge.

"We have seven months to prepare for our first competitive match, but the work really starts now."

Upson is looking to win his eighth England cap, having previously made four starts and three substitute appearances.

He made his debut as a Birmingham player against South Africa in May 2003, whilst his most recent appearance was against Spain in November 2004.

England face Switzerland at Wembley on Wednesday night.
