Anton: season over

Anton Ferdinand's season is almost certainly over after the injury sustained at Bolton on Saturday was confirmed as a hamstring tear.

The centre half joins fellow central defenders Calum Davenport (neck), James Collins (cruciate) and Danny Gabbidon (groin) on the long-term injured list after pulling up in the first minute of Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Bolton.

Alan Curbishley confirmed the news in his post-match press conference, saying:

"Anton's injury was a bit of a blow for us so early in the game, but perhaps synonomous with the season we've had so far.

"We've been a bit patched up for most of the season. But we've just got to get on with it, nothing's going to change."

James Tomkins will now battle with Jon Spector to play alongside Matthew Upson - assuming he remains fit - at home against Derby this weekend.
