Strike a light

West Ham United are being linked with a loan move for Palermo's 21-year-old Uruguayan striker Edison Cavani.

Today's Times claims that the Hammers are chasing the youngster - recently described by one scribe as 'South America's best-kept secret' - who scored five goals in his first full Serie A season last term.

Cavani, AKA El Matador joined his current club in January 2007 after Palermo beat the likes of Juventus and AC Milan to his signature. Prior to moving to Italy the youngster had spent his entire career in Uruguay with FC Danubio where he helped the team win the 2006 League Championship.

He made his debut for Palermo in March 2007 and scored a wonder goal (which you can see here) to grab a point against Fiorentina. Uruguay coach Gustavo Ferrin - for whom Cavani scored seven goals in last year's South American Youth Championships, helping the Uruguayans to third place - said of Cavani recently:.

"He is a very hard-working player. He's a great goal-scorer, but he pushes his teammates, as well. His commitment, his desire to win, those are his best qualities."

There would be no issue with regards to a work permit as the striker is of Italian descent.
