West Ham United have made an enquiry as to the availability of former fans' favourite Joe Cole.
Cole, currently out of favour at Stamford Bridge since the arrival of new manager Phil Scolari is rumoured to have been the target of an enquiry by the Hammers earlier this week.
Whether that was for loan or permanent deal is unknown but with Cole likely to spend much of the season on the sidelines a move elsewhere may be the best option for the England midfielder, who left West Ham in the summer of 2003 following United's relegation from the Premiership.
Meanwhile Liverpool have also been linked with a move for the 26-year-old, who will have to compete with the likes of new signing Deco, Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, Florent Malouda, Michael Essien, Shaun Wright-Phillips and John Obi Mikel for a starting berth in the Chelsea team this season.
Romford-born Cole made 147 appearances for West Ham between 1998 and 2003 before joining Chelsea in a £6million switch. He has since made over 200 appearances for the Blues although a third of those have come as a substitute.
A return to East London would certainly help to appease fans hugely disappointed by United's lack of movement in the transfer market thus far this summer.

''No chance. Why on earth would he come back? if he was available he would be wanted by the likes of Liverpool, Inter and maybe even Barcelona (they were after him years ago).
To put a West Ham kit back on would be a big step back for Joe, but there would be offers to move 'sidewards' and carry on in the Champions League.
As much as I would like to see it happen, it's amazingly unrealistic...''

''If we get joey back wow, but let's be realistic - he's at one of the biggest clubs in the world and for West Ham to pull this off it would have to be a miracle ...''

''Tom: a God amongst West Ham fans? You kidding? Not any I know! Don't insult players like Paolo putting Cole amongst them! He was a legend, Cole was far from it - he had the potential to become one but decided he had always loved Chelsea!''

''Would absolutely love for this to happen. With JC back I think we could really push for a UEFA spot. Otherwise, 10th is as good as we can hope for. ''

''Is this the same Joe Cole that celebrated wildly when scoring against us and stated on Match of the Day that Chelsea were the 'best fans in the country'? Nice one Joe, no thanks. I'd rather have Noble in the team any day - not that overrated show pony.''

''this is such a tease, that would be a dream come true for me. We should give them their Carlton back in exchange for our Joe!
That would rock ...''

''Joe Cole has always cared about the Hammers - unlike say Frank Lampard. Cole is a West Ham player - academy through and through. It's a rare thing though to see a graduate of his calibre come back to West Ham. I think it would be a good move for both West Ham and Joe Cole.''

''I kind of agree with Trevor H, he did leave, but to be fair he was always a Premiership player; I don't blame him for wanting to carry on playing his football there.
Curbs has disappointed me so far this window, and we just made idiots of ourselves with the Freddie saga, but if this turns out to be true I'd be over the moon.
He was my favourite player then, and if he came back, Deano would have some competition in my opinion.''
06:35PM 13th Aug 2008
''I assume that this is the same Joe Cole who couldn't wait to get away from WHU once they were relegated, although to be fair, he did state at the beginning of that season that it would be his last. He wasn't good enough for us then, why should he be now.
He is a good player but I am against bringing back players who have left so I say no. Of course he will improve us, but then he will leave again. I have never been a fan of Joe, but stranger things have happened in football.''
04:43PM 13th Aug 2008
''Wow! This would give everyone a lift! When you look at the competition for places at Chelsea you can actually see this being a possibility. Given they are still talking about a move for Kaka I suspect they would welcome having someone else pay the wages for the back up players! Come on Joey we need you mate! ''
03:21PM 13th Aug 2008
''Not in a million years! He's too good for us now and we know it. He should be playing Champions League football somewhere. If by some fluke it did happen :
1. He'd be a God amongst West Ham fans, probably up there with Paulo.
2. Curbs might actually survive the season.''

''The most underrated players in England.
How stupid would Chelski be to let him go.
I would welcome him back with open arms.
Come on Curbs, pull this one off.''
12:48PM 13th Aug 2008
''Wishful thinking I fear. Would be great though - never forgotten how hard he tried to keep us up when all the team around him, including the great PDC, looked like they had long since given up the ghost.''

''Bring back Joe Cole, let him become the centre-midfield superstar he would have been by now if he hadn't been wasted at Chelski ...''
10:14AM 13th Aug 2008
''if this is true then what a signing that would be. I can't see it happening but if it did then I would think the loan deal would be the one we would get. If Chelsea said yes I think Joe Cole just might be persuaded. He would fit in well with the team we have right now. Come on Curbs - pull this one off and you might get some fans off your back!''
