West Ham United's opponents in the third round of the Carling Cup will be Championship side Watford.

The two clubs met three times the season before last (at the end of which Watford were relegated) although the Hammers failed to win a single one of those encounters.

The two league games finished 1-1 (Vicarage Road) and 0-1 (Boleyn Ground) whilst the Hornets knocked United out of last season's FA Cup at the Boleyn Ground thanks to a 42nd minute strike from Anthony McNamee.

You have to go back 22 years to find the only previous meeting between the two clubs in this competition; the Hammers winning a third round tie 3-2 at Vicarage Road (goals coming from Mark Ward, Paul Goddard and Alan Dickens) back in October 1986.

Watford have, like West Ham, had a mixed start to their second season back in the the Championship, winning just one of their opening three games. They reached the third round of the compeition courtesy of victories against Bristol Rovers (1-0) and Darlington (2-1).

The third round takes place in the week beginning Monday, 22nd September.
