Did Spurs want Cole?

Speculation tonight suggests that Tottenham had a £10million bid for Carlton Cole rejected late last night.

The Times are claiming that Spurs moved for Cole after their attempts to sign Emile Heskey from Wigan ended in failure. However the Hammers are said to have demanded £12million for the former Chelsea striker which Tottenham refused to pay.

The North London based club eventually settled for rookie striker Fraizer Campbell on loan from Manchester United, with their star striker, Dimitar Berbatov going the other way in a £30million deal.

Dean Ashton was also reported to have been the transfer deadline day target of Aston Villa, who are rumoured to have offered around £12million for the United striker. West Ham are understood to have rejected the deal due to the meagre sum offered.

''"Defoe went for £8million and he scores goals"

Cole has already scored this season, player costs are higher than they used to be, and we were relegated at the time, and Defoe wanted out. ''

''If they knew they were getting a loan deal for Di Michele why would they keep a striker who does not score? I would sell him for less than six million ...''

''And if either Ashton or Bellamy gets crocked again before the January window then who exactly would we have to play front if we had shipped Cole out? £10million? Gee that's great - take in £10million, get relegated and then lose £100 million. Really clever that.

The one smart thing this inept board did this window was NOT sell Cole to the mugs in North London.''

''I guess Curbs should have said, 'judge us by what we do after the window closes and 18 hours elapse.'''

''I would have driven Carlton Cole to Tottenham myself for £10million - they must have something in their eyes if they think he's worth that. Still, two extra players, one 32 years old, the other 26 who I've never heard of. What a sad state of affairs from our WHUFC.''

''£10million for Cole? We should have bit their hands off. I know he works hard but so does a pit pony and Carlton in front of goal is just about as useful. After watching him against Wigan I honestly believe he would make a decent centre half, useful in the air and good at putting it into row Z.''
