Megson on Davenport

Bolton boss Gary Megson has confirmed that a deal has been struck with West Ham for Calum Davenport.

Megson, talking to reporters in this morning's pre-match press conference confirmed reports that the two clubs had agreed a deal worth around £3million for the former Coventry defender.

However the Bolton manager added that he was also looking at alternative options including a French centre half.

"We've spoken to West Ham about Calum and there is an agreement," he said, "but we are looking in certain positions and there's not just one player we're looking at.

"So that one remains to be seen whether it actually goes through."

Meanwhile today's Mirror claims that Davenport was issued his marching orders after he told Gianfranco Zola that he was not prepared to sit on the bench for the recent 2-1 home win against Stoke City.

Davenport, who had played in the three matches prior to the Stoke match was dropped for the game in favour of the returning James Collins. The Mirror claim that the centre-half told a 'shocked' Zola 'I'm not f*****g playing for you'.

''It is completely right that Zola should seek to shrink the squad. I'm happy with the moves so far and would also like to see Faubert and Neill out and Moon and a tasty playmaker in. That would certainly generate some cash and cut the wage bill and gives us a world-class right-back.

I think Freddie Sears needs to play more, even out of position and Collison should be on the sheet every week. We have Dyer back and quality players like Tomkins in the wings. We're ok as long as the Chairman weathers his own personal storm.''

''My only concern for Davenport is that he hasn't played regularly in the Prem for so long. I wish him all the best though.''

''He's good in the air - I think he'll do well at Bolton.''

''Of all the players heading for the exit in this January transfer window I admit Davenport will be the greatest miss for me.

He is a good squad player and I felt he rarely put in a bad performance for us but if you have a bust-up with the boss and say what is alledged then I'm afraid it's curtains - and shows to the rest of the squad that Zola will not be messed with.

Interesting times ahead, I feel. ''
