Harry in for Mapeza

Harry Redknapp is poised to sign Zimbabwean international captain Norman Mapeza on a free transfer following an impressive trial period.

Mapeza, 25, has been on trial with the Hammers during the last week, and has impressed the Hammers boss to the point where Redknapp is considering offering the former Galatasary star a permanent contract.

The central defender is likely to play in tomorrow's Julian Dicks benefit match at Upton Park, and should all go well could sign for the Hammers within the next week.

Redknapp met Mapeza's agent - the former Wimbledon player John Fashanu - at Barnet last Monday where preliminary talks were held.

Mapeza has played in Turkey recently at both Galatasary and Dardenelspor - from whom he has just been released - as well as having enjoyed a spell in Poland. He is the current captain of the Zimbabwean national team having made his international debut at just 20 years of age.
