Green: It's touch and go for Rio

Filed: Sunday, 13th August 2000

Hammers physio John Green has added to injury worries ahead of Saturdays game at Chelsea with the news that Rio Ferdinand is unlikely to have recovered from injury in time for the match.

Ferdinand has missed much of the pre-season due to a hip injury. And according to Green his chances of being fit for Saturdays curtain raiser at Stamford Bridge aren't good.

"Rio gets pain when he lifts a leg, and has a problem running" Green explained. "He needs complete rest.

"The last thing we need is for Rio to play in the opening game and break down."

Rio's injury could leave Hammers boss Harry Redknapp down to the proverbial 'bare bones' already. Hayden Foxe is still to obtain a work permit, and Stuart Pearce is not guaranteed to be fully fit, which leaves Igor Stimac and Steve Potts as the only two fit recognised centre backs.
