Aston Villa v West Ham Utd: half time report

Filed: Saturday, 18th April 2009
By: Staff Writer

The Hammers go into the break a goal behind at Villa Park despite a bright opening 45 minutes.

Having dominated the opening ten minutes Gianfranco Zola will have been disappointed to see his side concede from what was only Villa's second attempt of the afternoon. James Milner's cross from the right was turned in by Emile Heskey from the edge of the six yard box to give the home side - seeking their first win at Villa Park since January 10th - an early lead.

West Ham responded well to Carew's goal, creating a number of chances but failed to find the net. United's best chances of the half fell to the lively Junior Stanislas and David Di Michele, both of whom failed to find the onion bag despite having just goalkeeper Brad Friedel to beat.

At the other end Villa were the width of the post from going 2-0 ahead on 27 minutes when a Mark Noble error saw Heskey strike the foot of the post having stuck an outstretched boot on the midfielder's back pass.

All in all however there have been plenty of positives for Gianfranco Zola to take into his half time talk; all we need now is a goal or two.

We'll have more for you at the final whistle.
