Supporters' side West Ham iFC gained anothe win today against their counterparts from Cambridge United. Boss Vinnie White reports...
Many thanks to Richard French and the guys from Cambridge for making the trip down today.
Due to a late change of venue, the match was played at the Met Police Sports Ground in Chigwell, Essex.
After not having a league game for almost two months, it was important for West Ham to continue as we have been this season and pick up the victory. We had a strong squad to choose from and started as follows:
Heywood S
White, Stafford, Tanner, Dunn
North K, Coates, Dieblius
Batterbee
Heywood R, Dillworth
Subs:
Wells, Nugent, Soave, North C
The 4-3-3 formation wasn't serving us too well in the first 15 minutes, with Cambridge taking advantage of the extra space on the wings, and the West Ham forwards were struggling to get into the game. Indeed, Cambridge took the lead when from a corner. West Ham failed to clear convincingly and failed to organise leaving the Cambridge forward with a simple tap in. A bad start to the match.
West Ham iFC 0 - 1 Abbey Utd
West Ham equalised almost immediately through Luke Dieblius (Ted Dibiase) from some good link-up play from the forwards.
West Ham iFC 1-1 Cambridge United
West Ham then reverted to type and the more comfortable 4-4-2, formation bringing Batters back into the midfield, and Ted moving to the left, with Kev North moving to the right. We immediately looked more comfortable and, from a corner taken by Ted, a penalty was awarded for handball by the Cambridge full back. Last season's top scorer Dillworth stepped up confidently and slotted the ball into the bottom left hand corner.
West Ham iFC 2-1 Cambridge United
As the first half drew to a close, some decent play down the left with Sideshow Dunn, Ted and John Coates saw Batters released about 25 yards from goal.
With the ball hobbling softly towards the goal, a comfortable save was expected, but somehow the Cambridge keeper managed to dive over the ball and send it in. Batters' first goal of the season, and one for the end of season blooper DVD's!
Half Time West Ham iFC 3-1 Cambridge United
Two changes at half time saw Colin Wells replace White who is running the Watford Half Marathon tomorrow and Ted withdrawn for Chris North to give us more width.
The second half started as the first finished with West Ham well on the front foot. Within two minutes of the restart, Dillworth scored his second of the game with a solid finish across the keeper.
West Ham iFC 4-1 Cambridge United
West Ham were then caught a little square at the back allowing the Cambridge forward to get in behind the defense and slot high past Stew Heywood.
West Ham iFC 4-2 Cambridge United
West Ham then took control again and Richie Heywood had a header harshly ruled out for an off-side from John Coates, who everyone on the pitch could see had stopped playing and was walking back, not interfering. A shame for Richie who had a good game.
Sideshow Dunn then made way for returning hero Chris Nugent in a straight swap at left back.
West Ham's 5th and final goal came with around 20 minutes to go. Matt Dillworth wrapping up his hat-trick with another strong finish.
West Ham iFC 5-2 Cambridge United
Dillworth was replaced by Jim Soave with 15 minutes to go.
The match finished 5-2 and West Ham move back to the top of the league, results permitting.
Next week, we have Barnet at home, who are one of only two teams to beat us this season. Next week will show us all how far West Ham have come this season.
West Ham Goals:
Dieblius
Batterbee
Dillworh x3
Manager's MOTM:Matt Tanner - Strong in the tackle and in the air. Made some great bursts forward and played some outrageous long balls. A great game from Tanner
