The Lars word

Lars Jacobsen has told supporters not to blame Avram Grant for their lowly league position - but the players themselves.

The Danish full-back, who signed a one-year deal with West Ham on transfer deadline day last August admitted that the team's collective performance this season had simply not been good enough.

However he fell short of extending the blame to the under-pressure Grant, who some quarters have suggested is set to receive the chop this summer regardless of whether the Hammers manage to avoid relegation or not.

"As a player you need to look at yourself. It's us playing and it would be very wrong for a player to criticise the manager," he told onside.dk. "It is us players who need to look at ourselves - perhaps we should have done better during the season."

And with regards to the manager, Jacobsen added: "I can only speak for myself, I've enjoyed working with him and I've had a good season under him. It may well be that we have not got the points we should, but you never know if it would have been different with another manager."
