The opposition view: Aston Villa

Relieved Aston Villa fans were understandably less than glowing in their praise for West Ham following yesterday's disappointing performance at Villa Park...

"Great result. But I thought we were awful. Really awful. West Ham were just as bad thankfully but we won't survive playing like that. The distribution from midfield to attack was as bad as it gets really. Defence were pretty solid, however West Ham bar the first 10/15 of the second half and last five minutes offered zero. Ray Wilkins pretty much summed it up for me: for two Premier League teams it was nowhere near good enough."

"Apart from the Darren Bent clearance i'm struggling to think of anything West Ham created before we scored our goals. After that we did our usual panic and they created a fair bit by lumping it into the box. Besides the two goals we also had the Weimann chance, the Zog shot and the Vlaar chance. Would have been a travesty if they'd got anything today."

"I thought we were pretty terrible myself. We had a good spell in the second half though which got us the win. West Ham were awful though, I have no idea what match Sam Allardyce was watching. Please can we now build on this."

"Such a vital win. Hopefully the team will take some confidence from that. We were pretty hopeless in attack for large parts of the game, lacked ideas in final third, but solid defensively, which is more important given the problems we've had. I don't think West Ham offered a lot mind. You look at them only six points ahead of us and they could get dragged into it yet if that's a typical performance for them."

"Well thank the holy Lord! Finally we scrape a win. I thought we were awful for large parts and it was nothing more than a battle really but glad we won it and I would have expected nothing else against a physical West Ham team. The result was all that mattered however today and hopefully that will bring a little bit of confidence back. Now a draw from one of the next two and we have a chance."

"Mark Noble had the reputation of being the next big thing out of West Ham but I've never seen him put in anything more than an ok performance and often he's not even that good. Given the respective experience and ages I wouldn't have him over any of our current midfield."

"Mark Noble is nowhere near as bad as some people are making out. You don't play over five seasons in the Premier League if you're crap. I'd have him in our team at the moment. Statistically he's the best tackler and ones of the best passers of a ball they've got this season. I'm just glad he had a poor day yesterday but I think most West Ham players generally do away from home. He's an average premier league midfielder all day long; if the general consensus amongst the West Ham fans is that he's useful, that tells you all you need to know."

"The first half was poor from both sides, but we edged it and should have been in the lead early on. Second half both sides were better going forward but there were still very few chances until the Bent clearance off the line. After that we were on top and were rewarded with a penalty and free kick. It was only in the last five that they really got any dominance, and that was largely due to nerves on our part, Westwood was terribly unlucky with the OG."

"Funny old game; I thought we were far worse than at Everton and yet three points in the bag. The main thing is we've got the "not holding onto a lead" hex off our backs - not to mention the "not winning a game" hex. Only the "not keeping a clean sheet" one to go! I'm hoping that may just be where our season veers away from the iceberg. Its amazing what a win will do. As others have mentioned, could have been a whole different story if Bent wasn't goal hanging at the wrong end. "

"He's a curious one is Allardyce. He invests so much resource in different kinds of sports science, fitness, nutrition, psychology, astrology, feng shui, soothsayers, witch doctors, particle physics and so on and yet the end result is the most archaic, lowest common denominator attritional bollocks football."
