Dyche takes it on the chin

Burnley manager Sean Dyche has backed referee Robert Madley - despite the official's decision to award West Ham a controversial penalty in last night's Capital One Cup tie.

Madley awarded two penalties to West Ham during the second half, both of which were converted to secure a 2-0 win for the Irons. And whilst the second was an obvious foul - after Jack Collison was felled in the box - the first wasn't quite so clear cut.

Kevin Nolan, who had only been on the pitch for a matter of minutes went down on the edge of the six-yard box following a challenge from Clarets defender Jason Shackell - a challenge for which Madley immediately signalled a spot kick.

That was much to the annoyance of Shackell, who appeared to have some justification for his appeal after TV replays failed to conclusively reveal an infringement. However Burnley boss Dyche was more understanding, inisisting after the match that the officials have "a tough job to do".

"I respect referees and I respect that decision - albeit one that I disagree with," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"I think it's very difficult for referees to give a decision from behind an incident, particularly from distance and particularly with two or three players in the way. He assured me he had a good view of it and that's why he gave the decision. I have to go with that."

The 42-year-old, who has been in charge at Turf Moor for a year was pleased with his side's efforts, despite them tumbling out of the competition. "I thought we delivered a very good performance," he said.

"We looked to penetrate and put some good quality together, but you need to find that little edge to get in front and we've done that very well this season. There are some real positives but there's also a thirst to win - and that's the disappointing side of it."
