West Ham are reported to have failed with a bid to sign Milan defender Philippe Mexes on loan.
The 32-year-old central defender is surplus to requirements at the San Siro, where Milan are seeking to offload both Mexes and team mate Michael Essien ahead of next week's transfer deadline. However the former French international centre half won't be coming to West Ham after i Rossoneri rejected United's loan proposal - according to Corriere dello Sport.
A regular starter for Milan during the 2013/14 season, Mexes' long career has also taken in stints at Auxerre and Roma.
He also represented France on 29 occasions between 2002-2012, when he made his most recent appearance for the national team.
Sam Allardyce remains desperate to add another central defender to his squad ahead of the transfer window deadline.
15-year-old Reece Oxford was named on the bench against Sheffield United last night due to the lack of options currently available to the manager.
Currently, Allardyce has just three recognised central defenders in his pack - James Tomkins, James Collins and Winston Reid - with the future of the latter still shrouded in uncertainly.
