West Ham United's James Tomkins has been fined after pleading guilty to assaulting a police officer.

The 25-year old was ordered to pay a fine of £3,500 plus costs as a result of the incident which took place outside Brentwood's Sugar Hut nightclub in December 2013.

Tomkins was arrested a a matter of hours after West Ham's 3-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford. He was said to have injured a Police officer in the ensuing brouhaha, who was awarded the nominal sum of £200 compensation as a result at Southend Magistrates Court earlier today.

Rupert Bowers, defending, told the court that Tomkins believed he had let himself down.

"He has been extremely stressed about these proceedings, about his reputation and the coverage it has had," he said. "He will no doubt also be disciplined by his club by way of a financial penalty."

The defender admitted assaulting and obstructing a police constable and being drunk and disorderly.
