Carroll faces Southend in behind-closed-doors friendly

Andy Carroll is set to make his first appearance since sustaining his ankle injury later today.

The England international, who is yet to kick a ball this season is set to play in a specially-arranged behind-closed-doors friendly against Southend United at Chadwell Heath this morning, according to the Mail's Matt Lawton.

That is further good news for Sam Allardyce, who could enjoy the luxury of a fully-fit squad once Carroll returns to full fitness. Once a shoo in for a first team spot, Carroll will now have to dislodge either Enner Valencia or the Diafra Sakho to retain his first team spot.

And that could prove a difficult task for 25-year-old who has scored just nine goals for West ham since joining the club (initially on loan) from Liverpool in August 2012.

By way of contrast, Valencia (three) and Sakho (seven) have scored ten goals between them from their first eight games.
