West Ham United's leading goalscorer Diafra Sakho will not be joining team mate Cheik Kouyate at the African Cup of Nations.

The back injury sustained by the in-form striker recently against West Bromwich Albion has curtailed any hope he had of representing Senegal in the tournament, which begins in 10 days time.

That news was was confirmed by the head coach of Senegal, Alain Giresse, earlier today. "Sakho is not on the list of 23 players, his back problem is even preventing him from moving," he said.

At present there is no news as to how long the 25-year-old will be sidelined for, although Sam Allardyce will be hoping for a swift recovery for this season's Premier League surprise package.

Costing just £4million when moving from FC Metz in the summer, Sakho has scored nine goals already this season - just one less than the total of ten scored by Enner Valencia, Andy Carroll (3 each), Mauro Zarate and Carlton Cole (both with 2) combined.

With Alex Song also not now featuring in the African Cup of Nations, Kouyate will be West Ham's sole representative at the tournament. Sakho has been replaced in the Senegal squad by Pape Moussa Konate of Swiss outfit Sion.
