Enner Valencia has retracted comments he made on Spanish radio at the weekend regarding West Ham United's medical team.

The Ecuador international, who is currently sidelined with injury claimed in an interview with El Universo that he was still awaiting a diagnosis on the injury that is set to keep him sidelined for another two to three months.

However in a statement posted on West Ham's website at whufc.com this afternoon, Valencia wrote that he had "utmost respect and confidence" in the club's medical staff, who have been treating him since he was injured in the Europa League clash with Astra Giurgiu last month.

“It has been a frustrating time, but I would like to make clear that I have the utmost respect and confidence in the club’s medical team and the specialists I was referred to," he said. "I would like to apologise to them and the club for any issues arising from the recent press coverage.

"I will continue to work as hard as I can with them to return to help the team as quickly as possible, and continue the good start I made to the season. It is not possible to put an exact date on when I might be back on the pitch, but you can be rest assured that I am motivated to get fit and score more goals for West Ham United as soon as I can."

Speaking on Saturday, hours after West Ham had been beaten 4-3 at home by Bournemouth - a game that Valencia attended along with former Hammer Guy Demel - the striker claimed to be "surprised" at the lack of updates on his progress he had received from the club's team.

"It's a bit complicated," he said at the weekend. "It's now been three weeks and still nothing has been diagnosed, although it seems that my fibula has moved a little. This has surprised me.

"I didn't want to say anything but now I must say something. They [West Ham] told me that if I wanted to see another doctor then it must be a doctor that they know."
