The opposition view: Sunderland

The East End was full of miserable Mackems on Saturday night as Sam Allardyce's return didn't quite go as planned.

Read what the Sunderland contingent thought of both their team and West Ham United in this week's OV...

"Created some great chances. Looked better than West Ham. One mistake gave away goal. Played some decent stuff. Just can't finish. Defoe should have scored. Typical that two gilt-edged chances should fall to Rodwell. We're playing OK but it's results that matter now."
- Roger the Dodger

"First half we were dreadful like, didn't we have something like 55 per cent pass completion? But second half we were much better and they were the ones that were dreadful; it was pretty much two Big Sam sides playing against each other."
- ChrisAshley

"It was one of those days for Sunderland where just about everything went against us. On the balance of play - and considering the chances we had - we really should have taken at least a point from this game, but didn't. Although it's not the end of the world, that extra point could be crucial come the end of the season - and nobody knows that more than Sam Allardyce."

"Wasted opportunity there. On another day we would have got a couple, but then they might also have scored more. West Ham really didn't look very impressive, but we aren't good enough to carry a couple of key players having 'mares. Interesting that Byram didn't get the yellow for wrestling on the wing (the type often described as 'making it easy for the referee'), picks one up later and then has a key part in the game. Feel a bit bitter about that. On the upside if that is our new 'bad' then we've stepped up quite a bit."
- McMackem

"The results we have had against Liverpool and Man Utd and the performances of them including the City game - and we come back down to earth against a middle of the road team, again. it was there for the taking. We fannied about and it took West Ham 1, 2, 3 passes and they had a chance on target. We are not clinical enough and our desicion making is atrocious, like."
- SNAFU86

"Mark Noble. Everything Cattermole thinks he is and we wish he was."

"Long balls to Defoe. Surely there has to be something else we can try? Yeah it might work every other match but that's not enough to keep us up. West Ham knew exactly what we would try and kept Defoe silent for most of the game. He can score when given the chance but we can barely give him the chance. There has to be some other way we can try and play to get it to him. Baffles me why Sam didn't buy the big target man he needs to play this type of football and got rid of the only one who could fill the role (in Fletcher)."
- Kenna

"As someone who doesn't watch a lot of full matches bar SAFC, the last three games I've seen West Ham play are our two this season and last year's surrender in Sam's last game v the Mags. Diabolical in every one. Presumably they have a knack of signing decent players and nicking many wins (ie today), both things we find so difficult."
- Spuff

"With the West Ham game out of the way hopefully Big Sam can start focusing on his current employer. I am surprised how in love he is with West Ham considering the speed with which the owners got him out of the door (Mags game) and how disliked he is by a big section of their fans. He goes on about how he hated his time up here as player if you read his book, he doesn't even bother to put a photograph of his time up in Sunderland. This weekend just feels to me like he's here because there was nowt else on offer. The way things are going his legacy up here will be eight months in charge and relegation. Hope not."
- Thomas Hearns

"The West Ham fans I spoke with were pretty complementary. They were all quite down to earth, spoke well about BSA and were saying the 'West Ham way' thing was bollocks, made up by the media. It was a shame they decided to call us paedos."
- Botchie
