Dimitri Payet's France are through to the quarter finals of Euro 16 - at the expense of Darren Randolph's Republic of Ireland.

The hosts became the first nation to book their place in the last eight of the tournament courtesy of a 2-1 win over the Irish, despite having fallen behind to a Robbie Brady penalty inside the first two minutes in Lyon ths afternoon.

Atletico striker Antoine Griezmann equalised for France with a header 13 minutes into the second half before he added his second of the day just four minutes later, sending his country into a last eight encounter with either Iceland or England next weekend.

Payet, who had almost single-handedly propelled the French into the knock out phase of Euro 16 had a much quieter afternoon than in recent outings, despite playing the full 90 minutes.

Unfortunately Hammers team mate Randolph proved to be far busier than he might have hoped, although two excellent saves from United's reserve stopper meant he could hold his head high despite his team's exit.

* James Collins' Wales are also through to the quarter finals following their 1-0 win over Northern Ireland on Saturday at the Parc des Princes, Paris. The centre half is yet to feature at the tournament.

* The fourth and final Hammer to be involved in Euro 16, Angelo Ogbonna, is currently preparing for Italy's mouth-watering last 16 clash with Spain tomorrow afternoon.
