Toni Martinez has joined Oxford United on loan until the end of the current campaign.

So far 19-year-old Martinez has been scoring for fun this season, averaging more than a goal-a-game for West Ham's Under 23s.

And now he had been granted the opportunity to stake a case for a spot in next season's first team squad by joining the League One side on a short-term deal.

"It’s an exciting signing," Head Coach Michael Appleton told oufc.co.uk. "He has a terrific scoring record and is very highly thought of at West Ham.

"It is great that clubs think of Oxford United as a club where we help nurture talented young footballers and help their development. He will certainly add some serious competition for us at the top of the pitch."

And the Spanish striker admitted that he was looking forward to a new challenge. "This is a great opportunity at a very good club," said Martinez. "It is an important step for me and one I am really looking forward to."

Martinez is set to make his debut for Oxford in the FA Cup this weekend against Championship side Newcastle United.
