It's a dog's life...

It's not often you see a DOG on the pitch at West Ham. But that's exactly what happened during a Division One clash with Liverpool 45 years ago...

The game itself was a pretty unremarkable affair, with Liverpool running out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from John Toshack (taking advantage of a John McDowell blunder) and Steve Heighway, who added the second decisive strike in the opening minute of the second half.

Ray Clemence sees the funny side

However there was at least something for the home fans to cheer when a small black dog entered the playing field - before making a beeline (or should that be dog-line?) for the goal that Ray Clemence was defending.

Once there, the mischievous little chap cocked his left leg up the goalpost before presumingly delivering his verdict on West Ham's performance during the match, which took place on 15 April 1972.

Poor Clyde Best was rumoured to be so traumatised by the incident that he fluffed a simple chance soon after that was cleared off the line. The visitors went on to win comfortably and end the season in fourth place, whilst the Hammers had to settle for 14th spot.
