Arbeloa and out

Alvaro Arbeloa has officially announced his retirement from professional football.

Although Hammers fans may be forgiven for thinking he jacked it in around 12 months ago upon moving to London, the former Real Madrid star told Marca that it was time to call and end to a glittering career - before offering his services to his former club.

"It's time to say goodbye," he said. "Physically I was ok to keep playing. Madrid is the club of my life, I will never call to ask for a job, but I am always available to offer myself".

The 34-year-old made just three appearances for West Ham last season after signing on a free transfer, after falling out with manager Slaven Bilic. He had been tipped to moove to China, but has since ruled any move out.

Speaking at the time of his arrival in the UK, Arbeloa insisted that he was delighted to be back in the Premier League.

"It's a great chance for me and I'm looking forward to playing with this side," he said last August.

"I was talking with Luka Modric and Matteo Kovacic and they told me good things about the coach, so I want to work with him. Hopefully I can learn a lot of things."
