Collins back by October

James Collins has been given the good news that he could be back in first time action as early as the beginning of October.

The 33-year-old centre half collapased in agony midway through the second half of Saturday's goalless draw against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns and was immediately diagnosed with ligament damage to the ankle.

However a scan has revealed that the damge is far less serious than first thought and as a result, the Welsh international should be back in full training within two to three weeks.

"It’s good news for James in the sense that it is not long-term or as serious as it perhaps looked at the time," said West Ham's experienced Head Medic Gary Lewin.

"He is the type of player who will run through brick walls for you and will be desperate to get back as quickly as he can, but we will manage him very carefully and ensure he returns when the time is right."

Collins had been feeling the injury some time prior to collapsing on the pitch during Saturday's match, lending weight to suggestions that the injury could potentially have been avoided had the defender been replaced earlier.
