West Ham's Jose Fonte has apologised to the club's supporters on behalf of the team following their 3-0 humbling against Brighton at the Olympic Stadium tonight.
Fonte was part of the team that was booed off at half time and then again at full time as they were easily beaten by a Brighton side that hadn't won a top flight fixture on the road since the 1980s.Embed from Getty Images
"That wasn't the performance we wanted to produce or the performance the fans deserved. It was desperately disappointing," he told Sky Sports. "we need to look at ourselves as this cannot happen.
"It happened a few times last season and we've got to put this right. This is West Ham and it's just not possible. We've got to learn from this.
"How can we not understand the fans booing? They don't like to lose 3-0 at home, we don't like it either. We're all disappointed, we're all frustrated. We apologise and we're going to work very hard on the training ground to not let them down again like this."

However Fonte had some consoling words for his under-pressure manager Slaven Bilic, who accepted full responsibility for tonight's defeat when speaking to the media post-match.
"It's not only the manager, it's the players as well," said Fonte. "Individually we have an unbelievable squad, we shouldn't be in this situation. Of course, we need to look at ourselves and everyone needs to work harder - because it's not only on the manager.
"The players tried hard, we tried the best we could - but sometimes it just doesn't go your way. We've got to move on. We have a game on Wednesday and we have to go and beat Spurs. We have to react and we have to bounce back."
