"We’ve been close to getting a result before against the so-called bigger teams," Reid told Fox Sports. "Today was about keeping a clean sheet at the back and giving ourselves an opportunity in the second leg. We’ve certainly done that."

Elsewhere at the weekend, Diafra Sakho was on the scoresheet as Senegal booked their place at next summer's Finals.

The wantaway Hammer opened the scoring for the Lions of Teranga in their qualifying clash against South Africa before a Thamsanqa Mkhize own goal secured the win; Cheikhou Kouyate was also involved, before coming off with a few minutes to spare.

West Ham's Javier Hernandez was also in action on Friday evening, playing a major role in Mexico's 3-3 friendly draw with Belgium in Brussels in their first friendly since qualifying for next summer's tournament.

The Hammer played most of the game - before leaving the field late on clutching his hamstring - but it was the performance of PSV's Hirving Lozano that stole the headlines, with the yongster grabbing a brace and an assist.

Finally on-loan goalkeeper Joe Hart was an unused substitute for England, who drew 0-0 with Germany at Wembley on Friday night.
