No legal action for 'serious libel', say West Ham

West Ham have opted not to proceed with legal action against Portuguese club Sporting, despite director Nuno Saraiva referring to co-chairman David Sullivan as a "liar".

Back in September, the chairman's son insisted that the club would be taking action after Sporting laughed off Sullivan's claims, following West Ham's botched bid to sign Slaven Bilic's key transfer target William Carvalho.

"West Ham are commencing legal proceedings against the communications director of Sporting Lisbon," David Sullivan Jnr posted on twitter at the time. "To say we never made an offer is nonsense and serious libel. Our bid was submitted via the player’s agent and our negotiators in Portugal. We also put in a written bid."

However it appears that the chairman's son was speaking prematurely, after the club released a statement today confirming that no further action would be taken.

"West Ham and Sporting Clube de Portugal acknowledge that a breakdown in communication based in contacts between representatives from both clubs in respect of a possible transfer of William Carvalho was the cause of a misunderstanding," read the brief missive.

"Subsequent to this, the clubs have had positive communications and the matter is now resolved.

"On this basis, friendly relations between the clubs will resume and there will be no barriers to both clubs negotiating or working together in the future."

Sporting's Saraiva had branded Sullivan Snr as a "liar" and a "parasite" in a personal attack that followed a statement from the West Ham co-owner claiming that he had rejected the opportunity to sign William Carvalho on transfer deadline day.
