Pellegrini preparing for 'spectacular' challenge

Manuel Pellegrini has challenged his new employers to open the club's chequebook and allow him to buy enough players to make West Ham competitive in next season's Premier League.

The new manager, speaking in an interview in his native Chile admitted that he was taking on a "spectacular" challenge by agreeing to work for David Sullivan and David Gold, who he maintained had a reputation for being "careful" with the level of funding traditionally allocated to managers.

"Now I will force the owners to form a competitive team because they are rich but careful with money," said Pellegrini. "The challenge with West Ham is spectacular.

"We are trying to get the owner [Sullivan] to loosen up to make an important investment and thus bring the players we need. The idea is to sign a great figure. If we manage to get a big figure it is very important for the status of the club because that will help convince other players."

However one potential target definitely not coming to West Ham this summer is Manchester City number one Claudio Bravo, a fellow Chilean. "Signing [Claudio] Bravo for West Ham is not viable," he admitted. "It is not in West Ham's salary possibilities."

The only player to have joined West Ham since the transfer window re-opened at the end of last month is former Fulham defender Ryan Fredericks, who was confirmed as a Hammer yesterday.
