West Ham are said to have launched a multi-million pound bid for Sporting and Portugal star Bruno Fernandes.

According to various sources, both West Ham - whose interest we raised last week - and Athletico Madrid are locked in a battle to sign the £25million-rated World Cup 2018 star.

However the Hammers are reported to have made an opening offer of £20million for Fernandes, 23, who was part of the Portuguese squad knocked out of this year's competition by Uruguay last week.

He is also one of a group of Sporting players who recently tendered their resignations following a training ground incident in which several players were attacked by supporters angered by the failure to qualify for next season's Champions League.

* West Ham's on/off interest in former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere could be back on.

The 26-year-old, who is available on a free transfer, was close to joining Turkish side Fenerbahce last week but would prefer to stay in England and, specifically, London, where he is settled and has lived his entire life.

He is understood to have held preliminary discussions with West Ham representatives, who are considering a contract offer worth in the region of £4.5million per year.

* La Spezia youngster Samuele Mulattieri is a target for West Ham, according to the prolific TMW.

Still just 17, the attacking midfielder has generated plenty of interest in recent months and being out of contract will be available for a smaller fee. However the Hammers are rumoured to face stiff competition for Mulattieri's signature from the like of Juventus and Everton.

* Derby County teenager Luke Thomas is reported to be flying ome early from the club's summer training camp in order to holds talks with West Ham over a permanent switch.

KUMB reported last month how Thomas, the Rams' Young Player of the Year last season was on the verge of completing a move to West Ham; some weeks later, it looks as if that move is finally set to happen.
