Dean Ashton believes that signing Jack Wilshere would be a big mistake for West Ham.

The former Hammers and England striker, speaking to Sky Sports this morning believes that it would be a bad move for both parties - and suggested the 26-year-old would be better off moving abroad in order to continue his career.

"I think it'd be a waste of time for the club and the player," said Ashton. "It'd put pressure on him straight away.

"Having had long-term injuries I think he'd be better off going abroad to a warmer climate, a slower, technical league where he can thrive."

Yet despite his reservations regarding West Ham's move for Wilshere, Ashton maintains that midfield remains the club's weakest area and that in most need of urgent attention.

"it's a massive area in which they need to strengthen," he added. "I don't think it's going to be just one player either - they'll need one or two.

"Mark Noble's done a great job but there should be someone there fighting for his place. I though William Carvalho was excellent when I saw him for Portugal in the World Cup and I know they've been interested.

"He'd be perfect for that role. They need somebody else as well along side that defensive midfielder that's got real energy, that's something we've lacked as well - certainly last season.

"They need a player who's got that energy , can get up and support the forwards but also get back and defend as well - one of those all-round midfielders who are not easy to find!"

West Ham moved for Wilshere again this week after being frustrated in attempts to sign key targets such as Felipe Anderson. The oft-injured former Arsenal star, who is currently out of contract, is seeking a salary in the region of 5m per year.
