Jack Wilshere will be sidelined for up to six weeks after undergoing surgery on a sprained ankle.

The 26-year-old midfielder is reported to have sustained the injury last week during a training session at Rush Green and underwent surgery on Monday to correct the problem.

As a result, Wilshere is likely to be out of action until the end of October, according to The Guardian's Jacob Steinberg. That means he is almost certainly out of important upcoming games against the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham, who West Ham face little more than a month from now.

The former Arsenal man has seen his entire career interrupted by injury although this latest problem is the first time he has experienced a problem since joining West Ham on a free transfer in the summer.

Wilshere, who featured in West Ham's first four league games was absent on Sunday as United secured their first points of the new Premier League season with a 3-1 win at Goodison Park against Everton.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini selected a three-man midfield for that particular match, employing Pedro Obiang, Declan Rice and club captain Mark Noble in the centre of the park.
