James Collins could be on the verge of re-joining Aston Villa for a second spell.

Collins, who left West Ham at the end of last season had been close to agreeing a move to Ipswich Town a fortnight ago, after he was offered a contract.

However that move is off after Town boss Paul Hurst confirmed that the former Welsh international, who is available on a free transfer, was no longer a potential signing.

"I’ve been made aware he won’t be signing for Ipswich Town," said Hurst. "I’m surprised we’ve not seen anything in the press in some shape or form. I had a message from James and that deal is dead and buried now.

"I made no secret of the fact we wanted to do something there but I stand by the fact he wasn’t fit at the time. That was what was best for the football club. But if what I’m led to believe is happening, is happening then I wish him well.

"He was here and genuinely did enjoy his time here. The [contract] offer was common knowledge between parties and it was more about being fit. In between another club showed interest. It won’t be long, I won’t imagine."

That club is thought to be Aston Villa, who Collins previously played for from 2009 to 2012, in between his two spells at West Ham.

The 35-year-old has already been invited to train with at the Championship club by manager Steve Bruce once a minor injury has healed, and is reported (Mail) to have spent time at the club's Bodymoor Heath training ground this week.

He made a total of 170 Premier League starts for the Hammers over the course of his two spells at the club, from 2005-2009 and 2012-2018.
