Friend on hand to save the day

Match official Kevin Friend thought he'd help speed things along by removing a missile that had been thrown onto the field of play during tonight's Brighton v West Ham clash - but probably wishes he hadn't.

With the game at the Amex Stadium approaching the final ten minutes of normal time, Friend decided to take matters into his own hands by removing an unidentified item from the pitch during a break in play.

However what the startled official almost certainly failed to realise is that the object in question was a sex toy - which, as you might expect, led to howls of laughter from Hammers fans gathered behind the goal, from where the following image* was taken.

And if that in itself wasn't enough to send the away enclosure into mass hysteria, Friend's particularly clumsy handling of the phallic object almost certainly was...

Tooled up: Friend does his best to shield the offending item from TV cameras

Sadly the laughter in the West Ham end proved to be short-lived as Glenn Murray's first half goal proved to be enough to condemn the Hammers to a fifth Premier League defeat of the season.
