Carroll was a lunatic, says former team mate

A former team mate of Andy Carroll's who is frequently in trouble with the law has described the West Ham United striker as "a lunatic".

Nile Ranger played alongside the perennially-injured Carroll for two years at Newcastle United prior to the latter joining Liverpool in a £35million deal in 2011.

And speaking in an interview with the True Geordie Podcast, the currently-unattached Ranger - no stranger to controversy himself - suggested that Carroll's social life may have had a negative impact on his career.

"Andy's a lunatic but he gets the job done," said Ranger. "I think he's worse than me [for partying] but he's a good bloke, though. He's got banter and he's a good guy in general.

"He was going through a lot, like getting his car blown up in Newcastle, but he still bombed on and got his move to Liverpool after Kevin Nolan took him under his wing and said 'I'm going to look after you'.

"I don't know what he's doing now - probably just living life. I heard some rumours, that he snuck out and hurt his leg; knowing Andy the way he is, that definitely sounds like him!"

Carroll - like Ranger, who has been arrested on multiple occasions and who spent a spell in prison last year - also enjoyed a colourful past and was frequently in trouble with the Police during his early years as a professional footballer.

In 2008 he received a caution from Police following an incident in Newcastle, whilst a year later he was found guilty of common assault and forced to pay compensation to his victim.

In 2010 Carroll was left with a broken hand and team mate Steven Taylor with a broken jaw following a training ground incident, whilst later that year he was charged with assault, only to see those charges later dropped.

In 2011 he was warned to cut down on his drinking by then England manager Fabio Capello - the last England manager to call Carroll up to the national squad. You may see the interview with Ranger below (beware of foul language).
