Xande Silva says that he was delighted to be given the opportunity to make his Premier League debut - even if it ended in a disappointing defeat for West Ham.

The 21-year-old Portuguese forward replaced Marko Arnautovic midway through the second half in order to lead West Ham's attack for the remainder of the match.

And although he was able to fashion just the one goalscoring opportunity for himself, the Academy star - who only moved to England last summer - revealed that he was delighted to get his first taste of Premier League football.

"I’m very happy as it’s a dream come true," Silva told whufc.com. "It’s a dream because this is the best league in the world and every kid in the world wants to play in this league.

"I work hard every day for this. My teammates help me in training and I want to thank them. They spoke with me before the game; they helped me a lot during the day and in the game, as they do every day in training.

"It [my shot] was close to being a goal; I tried my best, but I’ll have to wait for the next game. We are disappointed with the game but we are still fighting for more."

And having made his debut, the former Vitoria Guimaraes player admitted that he was keen to taste more action - with one eye very much on next weekend's FA Cup third round tie against Championship side Birmingham City.

"It’s a dream to play in West Ham’s stadium and I will wait for my opportunity," he added. "Everyone wants to start these games in the FA Cup so I will wait for my opportunity and try to take it."
