However West Ham pulled out of the deal after the Turkish club requested a transfer fee, despite having previously intimated that the player would be available on a free transfer.

And it appears that whilst that sudden change of heart may have killed off the Chilean international's chances of a return to the Premier League, it has worked out well for Besiktas.

For the 31-year-old former Cardiff player now look set for a money-spinning move to Chinese Super League club Beijing Guoan, who are prepared to offer around $10million for Medal, according to reports.

Medel is set to be offered double the salary he currently earns with Besiktas, who are currently third in the Super Lig behind leaders Istanbul and second-place Galatasary.

West Ham eventually signed just two players during the January transfer window - Samir Nasri, who previously played for Antalyaspor on a free transfer and Benfica youngster Mesaque Dju.
