Let's get back on track in Austria

West Ham United's 6'3" centre half Kurt Zouma believes that West Ham "were a bit short everywhere" when falling to a narrow defeat against Wolves at the weekend.

Raul Jiminez's second half goal was enough to secure all three points for the hosts as West Ham produced an unusually limp performance at Molineuz, with a number of players seemingly out of sorts.

And if Zouma's verdict on the game is anything to go by, that will be a feeling shared by the whole squad following West Ham's first competitive defeat on the road in seven months.

“It was a disappointing game because we wanted to keep going in our good form and get the win," he told West Ham's website. "Obviously that didn’t happen.

“We started the game well, but after the first 20 minutes I would say we were a bit short everywhere on the pitch. There will be days like this. We couldn’t press well, they had the ball and made us run a bit more than usual and we conceded the goal in the second half.

“It didn’t happen at Wolves and it was a bad day, but we have many, many, many more games coming to change it up."

And hopefully, says the French international, the road to recovery can begin in Austria this Thursday evening when the Irons return to European action against Rapid Vienna.

“Hopefully we’ll get a reaction from Saturday and get a win on Thursday," said Zouma. "We have time to recover and prepare for the game, so hopefully we go there and win.

“We are all top players here and we have a great squad. We have to keep on working hard and we won’t win every game, but we want to win the majority of them.”

And even though he won't be there, Zouma sent a special message of support to his central defensive team mate Angelo Ogbonna, who is currently recovering from a recent knee op.

“We are all behind him, we all love him,” he said. “He’s an important player for the club and the team and we want him back as quickly as possible.”
