Re: England -v- Brazil & then -v- Belgium

saka is an immense player but i've definitely seen him have quiet games for arsenal. he will always default to trying to come onto his left foot, and while bowen can do that he's probably the best in the league at somehow getting round the outside of a player who already is basically in line with t...

Re: England -v- Brazil & then -v- Belgium

One thing about reverting to a back three to solve the defensive shortcomings is the recent shift in composition of the likely midfield trio allows it to work in a way that’s less stodgy than the previous attempts. Bellingham and (on early views at least) Mainoo both have a whole lot more attacking ...

Re: England -v- Brazil & then -v- Belgium

Watkins will have been the biggest loser last night. He himself hasn’t even played badly but Toney looked a better fit and Bowen probably did enough to get in the squad which means the 23 will have Kane, Toney, Bellingham and Bowen as centre forward options, probably in that order. Rashford can be p...

Re: The Summer Transfer Thread 2024

re. striker, we need to channel our inner gammon and buy from within the British Isles (either by nationality or those currently playing here) or don’t bother. No more foreign muck. How many times are we going to do this? It’s going to cost more but that’s because we’re bad at it so we have to pay t...

Stones
Walker

Alexander Arnold

All ahead of these and Tomori should be as well
On a slightly longer time horizon, Branthwaite as well.

Konsa and Dunk aren’t likely to taste a minute of tournament football.

Re: England -v- Brazil & then -v- Belgium

On the Mainoo only getting a call because he’s from Man U thing, it’s possibly true that he’s getting an opportunity at 18 that a player from Palace or Bournemouth might not get, but not necessarily for totally spurious reasons. I’m sure there’s always an internal discussion before selecting inexper...

Re: Declan Rice

His free kicks and corners for us were terrible. Now they're pretty good. :furrow: Yeah. It’s probably the key piece of evidence in the suggestion that his growth is not club/coach-specific and more a product of his own capacity to self-improve. Because it’s difficult to make the case that moving F...

Re: England -v- Brazil & then -v- Belgium

Mainoo seems to be flavour of the month so is getting his chance. If he played for a non-big-6 club he would be nowhere near the squad either. The whole thing stinks.. I'm not convinced Rice would've been handed the captain's armband if he still played for us, despite never really captaining Arsena...

Re: Declan Rice

The predictable pretence that he's suddenly a different player is the most irritating thing. The curse of being unfashionable. I think there's an element of truth to him being better, but the critical thing is it's little or nothing to do with his environment. He would invariably come back from the...

There’s at least one of us that has met him.

I sincerely hope so anyway because otherwise his behaviour is inexplicable.

Re: West Ham United v Aston Villa: match thread (17.03.24)

They have the fourth best away form in the league. Yikes, I had to check this because it seemed so unlikely - and you’re right. There’s a lesson there in hardening your view too early in the season. They had one away win until November - against Burnley - and as late as December they were bottom ha...

Re: David Moyes' Claret and Blue Army!

I thought he did well yesterday, and I could absolutely see why you move Bowen up top and then Ben on the right just after Digne came on I've been a bit down on him the last few games and how they've been managed – I think the Burnley and Freiberg reverses were almost entirely self-inflicted by our...

Fair enough chaps.

I'm a complete authoritarian when it comes to arms in the box, I'd penalise anything and everything until it stopped. Can't stand the vogue for starting with your arms round the waist of the opposing attacker.

Still not having it as a fool on the keeper...Aceface's 2nd image is a bit misleading - If Antonio had of put his arm across the keeper it's a maybe... But Martinez moves his own arm under Antonio's lifting Antonio's arm and tangles himself into Antonio... How dare you make me defend the league's m...

Re: West Ham United v Aston Villa: match thread (17.03.24)

We may well pay for the January decisions, but I'm not sure we have yet. Ironically, that 'yet' might prove to come in the form of the bit of business we did do. Phillips for Alvarez in three of the biggest games of the season – Leverkusen (biggest so far), Spurs (our cup final), Newcastle (essenti...

Re: West Ham United v Aston Villa: match thread (17.03.24)

I think my hate for this particular clown / keeper is clouding my (usually very honest and fair) judgement. It’s a good illustration of the moral hazard that’s been created about diving etc. You’re completely right that the theatrical tumble after had absolutely nothing to do with Antonio’s actions...

Re: West Ham United v Aston Villa: match thread (17.03.24)

That is a crazy argument. Essentially saying we should just let the keeper have a clean catch from every corner. I only saw it once yesterday and thought it was soft at the time. But it’s clear as day watching it in the video that Antonio loops his arm over Martinez’s which prevents him being able ...
