Re: Educate me about.....

Must confess Old Man Of Storr as far as "new recordings" go/went I stopped at "Time Out Of Mind". Felt I had enough Bob Dylan records for one man. Never quite connected with Neil Young, not denying his talent, just doesn't happen for me - perhaps it';s the voice ? Still you can't...

For Me Dylan is beyond compare. He has written more Great songs than anyone else and was able to write not only great protest songs but also great love songs too.

Re: Books you are reading

I read surprisingly few music related books, but have just finished Bruce Consforth & Gayle Dean Wardlow's "Up Jumped The Devil: The Real Life Of Robert Johnson" from 2019. It's incredibly well researched and dispels many of the myths surrounding blues man Robert Johnson and gives us p...

Re: Books you are reading

Recently finished and really enjoyed the English translation of Thomas Bressig's "The Short End of The Sonnenalle" (1st published 2001 in German). Set in the 1970's, It's a short and sweet novel of East Berlin teenagers living in the shadow of the Berlin Wall. Recommended to anyone who was...

Re: Today's celebrity death is...

Wasn't David McCallum in the "Colditz" TV series too ? I once spotted him on the District Line tube around South Kensington way. I was in boisterous company and said nothing until I was getting off at the next stop, when I respectfully called him Mr Kuriyakin - he smiled and looked relieve...

My uniformed opinion is that, just like before Lingard will sign with the highest bidder in the short term. I reckon he wants as much money as he can get as quickly as possible and sod the consequences.

Re: Books you are reading

Korea, not that it really matters, it's just that I would not want anyone to be put off of reading "The Train" for fear it is too bleak or "hard". I do not think "The Train" fit either of those descriptions. But I would say the other handful or so of "Roman Durs&qu...

Korea, I believe "The Man Who Watches Trains Go By" is a "Roman Durs", I don't know about the other you mention, but to me "The Train" is most definitely not a "Roman Durs" .

Re: Books you are reading

Just finished and can recommend Georges Simenon's "The Train" from 1958, which is set in regional France during the beginning of the Nazi invasion/occupation. I ordered my copy from the library and expected it to be one Simenon's "Roman Durs" (hard novels, to which I am, when in ...

Re: Books you are reading

Just finished Charles Portis' 1968 "True Grit", the first "wild western" novel I have ever read and what a great 220 page book it is. Rooster Cogburn is surely one of the great characters of American 20th Century fiction - recommended to all !

Re: Shaky is BACK!

Many years ago I was told that in the late 1960's Shakin Steven & The Sunsets had a heavy card carrying Communist contingent, IF it wasn't The Sunsets then it was an earlier band - one was called The Cossacks !
