Re: The kids are all right
Fair comment. But even if we do qualify again for Europe next season I don't think we need unduly worry about cover for "crucial" games. We are not a club whose status allows us to have players of top quality as cover for every position like Manchester City do. Unfortunately imo we are go...

Re: The kids are all right
For me Downes and Potts are possibly caught in the West Ham success trap. If we do not qualify for Europe either could do a job as a 4th CM but if we do then I doubt either is up to playing in a crucial European tie at the business end of the season. It was Downes who was largely at fault for the AZ...

Re: The Summer Transfer Thread 2024
It is all about which competitions we are in, the structure of any deal fee/wages wise and the overall make up of the squad. No issue with a 30 year old left back if we seriously think Scarles will make the step up in a couple of years to replace the first choice. Buy the lad from Ipswich and that i...

Re: The Summer Transfer Thread 2024
People speak about squad size as if everything is equal. 22 plus youth will be fine if we are not in Europe. Likely we will need more if we are. Certainly a full 25 might be too many if we just have domestic games and want to give youth a chance.

Re: The Summer Transfer Thread 2024
Is that the Dembele who was playing reserves football at Celtic when he was like 13? Toney is too expensive and on too many radars above us. I think I’d like the club to stay away from big money signings and big wages. Let’s just say a Grealish or Sterling is half interested in joining us. They’re ...

Re: The next 6 games...
Here's a question - would we all take a loss at home to Spurs if it meant knocking Leverkusen out? Very much what Frankfurt did the year they beat us and won it. They did not throw the league games but certainly the cup was their priority. Trouble is Liverpool were not in it. Bayer will be really t...

Re: West Ham United -v- SC Freiburg - 2nd leg match thread - 14.03.24
I feel like cress is scoring a free kick today. It seems too west ham that we’d buy the best free kick taker in the league and our back-up lb who barely plays (albeit is also good) scores on before him It would be so West Ham to actually get a free kick or two in a dangerous position with JWP on th...

Re: The Summer Transfer Thread 2024
Uefa has a €90m losses over three seasons rule, so anyone wanting to loss-fund their way up the league need to bear that in mind. I'm also not sure whether £105m losses over three seasons is being replaced, or merely complemented by the annual squad cost controls. Must admit I thought the idea was ...

Re: The Summer Transfer Thread 2024
This is already the case thought isn’t it? Or more specifically ‘let the historically rich clubs get richer’ Yes but without any control on losses the 85% revenue rule will help the likes of Newcastle (and any other team who have owners who are capable of writing off significant losses year in year...

Re: The Summer Transfer Thread 2024
City generate more football revenue than Newcastle. And they both have the owners who can simply write off losses if the proposed 85% percentage of revenue rules come in. It really is let the rich get richer and screw the rest. Let’s take us and Newcastle. Currently the revenues are not hugely disp...

Re: The Summer Transfer Thread 2024
Trouble is he is not going to be marked by Aguerd every week. He has generally looked pretty average for Burnley, it was our CBs that made him look decent.diehardhammer wrote: ↑Mon Mar 11, 2024 3:53 pm yeah agreed on fofana he looked a real handful and could play into our hands nicely with chelsea's money issues

Re: West Ham Utd V Burnley: match thread - 10.03.24
I’m always amazed that people can watch our CB’s consistently make mistakes and think that Harry Maguire would be the solution to that problem I see zero communication, leadership or organisation when Areola, Mavro and Aguerd play and barely any more with Zouma/Fab. Irrespective of whether he would...

Re: David Moyes' Claret and Blue Army!
If we finish 9th or higher again this year it will begin to look like one of the best periods in our history. Only twice have we ever managed better runs (ie 3 top 9 or above finishes on the trot as opposed to 3 in 4 years) once under Lyall (when he managed 4 in 5) and once under Rednapp. Moyes achi...

Re: ✍ Welcome, Kalvin Phillips
Not hindsight at all. I was wondering wtf was going on when Benrahma and Fornals were let go and Phillips came in costing circa £500k a week. Didn’t take a genius to work out he might not be match fit for a while and had suffered a huge confidence knock. As for formation, we weren’t getting a CF in...

Re: ✍ Welcome, Kalvin Phillips
Having a proper LW would have freed up Paqueta to play central and allowed Kudus to play inside. I would much rather we had bought / loaned a better player than Benrahma than get unfit cover for CM. As it turned out we started by playing all 4 of Soucek, Alvarez, JWP and Phillips which just seemed ...

Re: ✍ Welcome, Kalvin Phillips
As people have posted we did need him, especially when we let Coventry go. Kudus had more impact on the left second half yesterday than Benny or Fornals have had all season. We had zero cover in the centre. I doubt anyone, player included, believed he would be this far off the pace. For me it is far...

Re: ✍ Welcome, Kalvin Phillips
To my mind to suggest the Leeds Phillips was not a very good player is revisionism at its best. He was a large part of what made them tick. He was not “carried” for England, again that all energy role he had at the Euro’s was a large part of the success. It does look like the move to Man City has ru...

Should O’Neil be in the running for manager of the year? What he has done with Wolves and all their issues has been top draw. Have to wonder if Pep, Klopp etc could have done the same.

JWP is a superior version of noble who most never questioned because he was "one of our own" JWP is an excellent passer of the ball and has been an excellent addition to the team The Brentford game is a perfect example. It is his vision and pass that releases Emerson to cross for the firs...

Re: David Moyes' Claret and Blue Army!
Being contrary for a moment. Zouma stated, post match, that they (the players) didn't play well and started off poorly. Doesn't sound like an intent or style from the manager to me. Our ability to hold on to the ball (in most matches) is a big negative and even Moyes himself regularly says we could...
