Re: West Ham Utd v Bayer Leverkusen: match thread (2nd leg)
Imagine what the atmosphere would be like if we got the first goal. It'd put Sevilla to shame. If we come behind to win, it'd be a day of legend in the club's history. Either way, I agree that everyone should just enjoy the moment. Playing in the Europa against the top team in Germany is not somethi...

Re: Bayer Leverkusen v West Ham Utd Europa QF 1st leg match thread
Cresswell instead of Aguerd is an attacking decision. He may well be drifting forward and putting crosses in. Premier League teams may be prepared for that, but I bet Leverkusen isn't.

Re: Bayer Leverkusen v West Ham Utd Europa QF 1st leg match thread
Nah, we're playing one of the best teams in Europe. It's bad enough not having Bowen. If they were defensively dodgy then maybe I could see it, but neither is, or at least they're not compared to the alternatives.

Re: David Moyes' Claret and Blue Army!
“I am very happy to have moved in the winter and discovered a style of football that corresponds with my qualities,” he says. “At West Ham, there were lots of phases of play where you had to defend in a low block and it was about tempting teams in and attacking on the counter [/u], or with set piec...

Re: David Moyes' Claret and Blue Army!
There's a simple definition for a defensive side: they let in fewer goals because they're defensive-oriented, and they score fewer goals because they're defensive-orientated. All your tortured definitions of what "defensive" football is are just made up in your head or fads you've probably...

Re: David Moyes' Claret and Blue Army!
You may not appreciate it aesthetically, but I don't see how you can describe Moyes' approach as "low risk." Fact is, these are the stats this season: Conceded/Match 1.77 Match Goals Average 3.39 Clean Sheets % 16% Failed to Score % 19% It is a contrarian approach, but it certainly seems ...

@kennyskills.... thank you for your posts, I've found them interesting and illuminating. What do you think was the purpose of 07/10? What was the end game? It's something I can't get my head around. Surely Hamas would be aware that Netanyahu would respond aggressively? It's an oversimplification bu...

Re: Bayer Leverkusen v West Ham Utd Europa QF 1st leg match thread
I agree that the main thing will be to contain and frustrate them. We're the underdogs and they're the high-flying stars, so all the pressure at home will be on them. Bring the tie home and we could have an even bigger night than Sevilla.

Re: David Moyes' Claret and Blue Army!
 yeah whodathunk it This might sound crazy, but what if always bringing on an attacking player, as people are always calling for the manager to do, is simple-minded? What if sometimes, bringing on a defensive player like Cresswell will make us more likely to score goals and win the game? Emer...

Same old Moyes taking the piss. Making a defensive substitution while we're chasing the game, changing the game, and getting three points.

Re: David Moyes' Claret and Blue Army!
As I say, I think Moyes' plan remains "Keep buying players that improve the first team." That's a high risk strategy, because it means he spends little on reserve players, even when Sullivan doesn't sell them from under you. But if we're patient, we'll keep bringing in players like Paqueta...

Re: David Moyes' Claret and Blue Army!
Don’t think anyone’s gonna argue that Moyes hasn’t taken us forward, question is has he taken us as far as he can? He's proven to be West Ham's best manager since Lyall. He's taken us up a level at the club. Why wouldn't he be the best available candidate to take us to the next level? On the issue ...

Re: Postecoglou: are the cracks beginning to show? [non WHU]
I like him, but I've always doubted that he'd last there any longer than any other manager, Spurs fans being as deluded and fickle as they are. They don't have the money to be top four every season. Spurs fans will never accept that, though, so they'll turn on managers and cycle through them endless...

Re: The Sunak Government 2022-
Homelessness is twice as bad as when they took over, so of course their plan is to fine the homeless and presumably jail them if they can't pay the fine. https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1800285/homelessness-england-record-high-map-spt Hopefully the next election will be the end of this miserable p...

Re: Assists: 2023/24
People rave about Paqueta and Emerson, but this is turning into yet another amazing assists haul from Coufal. Probably our best right-back in my memory and the most under-rated player in our squad.

Re: David Moyes' Claret and Blue Army!
I don't believe anyone who says, "I'll support a manager who plays proper football, no matter how bad the results get." You had a perfect example to prove that with Pellegrini, and yet you still wanted him out as soon as the results turned bad. You'll always find an excuse to turn on a man...

Re: David Moyes' Claret and Blue Army!
I think the really interesting comparison between Moyes and Stokes/McCullum is that they're all finding relative success by breaking away from the orthodox approach. The problem with both approaches is that you make yourself an outlier and set up for easy criticism when it doesn't go as you want it...

Re: David Moyes' Claret and Blue Army!
Last night, Stratford, 39% possession, a 5-0 routing. That's neither luck, nor evidence of a defensively-minded tactician at work if it happens again and again (the result, not the score). Which it does. It's a meticulously constructed plan delivered, more often than not, to great success. And unde...

Re: David Moyes' Claret and Blue Army!
This thing about people loving it when we're losing but playing pretty football seems a bit like looking at the past through rose-coloured glasses. While players like di Canio, Carrick and Cole may have played some nice football from time to time, I distinctly remember the chaos and devastation of b...

Actual academics would disagree with you. https://www.ipsos.com/en-uk/brown-most-successful-chancellor-say-british-political-scientists I'm a lifelong Labour supporter, but Brown and Blair are as much to blame for the UK's long-term economic decline as the Tory austerians that followed them. I woul...
